The exact date and identity of the young woman are unknown, but she is likely wearing a tignon, a head covering that women of African descent were required to wear in the French Atlantic. The tignon laws were meant to enforce racial boundaries, but the tignon became quite fashionable. Liotard is known for his detailed, naturalistic portraits in pastel.
